Predation would cause huge internal rifts in any predator society, perhaps only conceivable in autocratic totalitarian states, were the individual, prey and predator alike, were seen as expendable to keep the great State running. Even if forced into such a situation, it would be to their detriment as a society and be too large of destabilising element to bear for any real length of time. The great irony being that these are creatures almost fundamentally designed to hunt but with their evolution and sapience, hunting other like minded beings goes against their now rational nature. Lets assume the same is true for predators as well. Counter to what cable news might have you think, humans beings find it tremendously difficult to kill (its a well documented situation, were in world war II only less than 10% of the fighting forces were responsible for direct casualties, most deaths due to artillery and other impersonal, indirect manners of combat) and with it brings huge psychological fallout in a person. Assuming that sapient predators have what amounts to human sapience, lets assume some fundamental psychology remains intact as well, ability to learn, memory, social bonds (when not species specific) and empathy. Making a grim assumption that predation might still occur as a way to counter the food shortage they could face, I think it still has tremendous downsides to sapient predators. Individual face off's may tend to favour the predator, but in wars of attrition numbers and supplies win. Predators have the disadvantage in two of these, assuming they still need protein to survive they have that much harder task of keeping some-kind of live stock (fish or poultry or insects), and the birthing rates of most predator species are dwarfed by their prey counter parts so are also short changed here. They have comparable intelligence and tool use, so conflict between the two would be decided by other factors, such as population, the physical nature of individual species and availability of food. I think predators would benefit the most form such partnerships, simply because they would lose the most between the two groups if hostilities broke out. But this is natural biology, not very relevant to the setting of Zootopia, were sapience of the mammals allows for far more variety in the kinds of interactions and pacts they can form. But a bit tough to answer, the symbiotic relationships between animals that spring to mind are ones that mostly have the animals on the same side of the prey/predator divide, eg the Tick eating egret and species of cows, but the exception I can think of is the one between crocodiles and a species of small birds, the crocs actively cease preying on the birds to allow them to clean their fangs. To those who are interested describe as best you can the thoughts of great Symbiotic combinations :) The whole idea of Animals evolving to think and reason like us humans can leave such a thing like this to potentially take effect should uncertainty be removed and trust that is formed and maintained.Īnd for the sake of discussion one could also throw in minor examples as well, but i am more focused on ones that could benefit the most from one another. My question is this, To which mammals of Two Different Species of the Predator and Prey spectrum respectfully would benefit the most from a Symbiotic Relationship should the whole thing of Fear/Potential Animosity be removed from the equation? So pretend for the sake of this Discussion that Bias and Fears aside were wiped away for some reason or another. This came to me the other day, but this might be more appropriate for one of /u/eng050599 's Science discussion threads, or might have already been discussed at one point.īut due to the evolution of Animals in Zootopia this raises an interesting query.
